The Busiest Craziest Most Super Fun Week (part 1)

November 14, 2010 by Sabrina Modelle

I really hate clichés, so I won’t say that when it rains, it pours. Maybe I just did, but ignore it. Let’s just say that I had one of the craziest, busiest, most fun weeks of my life. There was not a ton of cooking involved, but in the end, I ate a whole lot of delicious food and played three amazing shows.

Unfortunately I got sick for Halloween, my favorite holiday of the entire year. I still managed to dress up in costume in hopes that I could scare some trick or treaters in my Zombie Pin Up Girl costume. Joshua did all of the special effects makeup by hand and I did all of the regular ugly colored make-up make-up you see. Pretty gross right? We only had a couple of groups of kids show up, so I bundled up in some warm clothes and Joshua and I went and took Ruby for a walk around our neighborhood and happened upon a party at the Million Fishes Gallery and stopped in for a bit to look at some amazing art. So, I did get to hang out and have a little fun on Halloween.

I was a Zombie Pinup for Halloween

Tuesday was election day and marked the beginning of my insanely busy week. I’d been working from home nursing the nasty cold/flu I’d picked up but I still had to vote and play a show for our friend Glendon “Annaconda” Hyde. Anna was running for San Francisco’s District 6 Supervisor. Sick Wolf (my band) was with her all along the way and played quite a few fundraisers for for the campaign. With 16 candidates in the running, Anna fell right in the middle which was amazing for a someone who had no money at the beginning of the race, and was the complete dark horse. Annaconda made history. We love Anna and rocked out with all our hearts even if I couldn’t do it with my full voice.

Wednesday I went back to working in the office and by the time I got home, I was craving a hot bowl of soup and since I had some really lovely purple potatoes from farmers market, I thought I’d make purple potato and turnip soup. I had visions of a beautiful lavender colored soup filled. I started it off with red onion cooked in butter then boiled the purple potatoes, then I added the turnips last so that they wouldn’t turn bitter. I made a gorgeous thyme oil to drizzle on top. Then I put the potato, onion, turnip mixture into the food processor and added a bit of mascarpone. It tasted so divine, but no matter what I did with lighting, with bowls, this soup was not made for photos. The good news was, I’d have great questions for our photography panel on Saturday Morning at Food Buzz Fest.

Ugly Purple Potato & Turnip Soup

Thursday, back to work with leftover Frankenstein soup (yum) and then off to Oakland for another Sick Wolf show. This time we were opening for two of my favorite bands, Deadbolt and Thee Merry Widows. The first band, Blood Drunk Shenanigans was one that I hadn’t heard of, but turned out to be super fun. The show was amazing and I ran into lots of old friend and definitely made some new ones. Sharing a stage with bands that I’ve loved for so long was very very cool and every time I see Thee Merry Widows I think how some day I’d love to be in an all girl band. I love seeing how tight they are.

Friday, I took the day off work to recoup from Thursday’s show and to get ready for Food Buzz Fest a three-day food blogger extravaganza. Joshua and I started our day with an amazing breakfast. I made eggie BLTs with heirloom tomatoes, arugula, and bacon from heritage pigs drizzled with the leftover thyme oil from the purple potato soup. Check out Ruby looking at those sandwiches in the photo below.

Before meeting up at The Sir Francis Drake Hotel in San Francisco’s Union Square, I ran down to The Ferry Building to pick up my gift for the foodie gift exchange- some Persian lime olive oil from Stonehouse.

The lobby at the Sir Francis Drake filled with Food Bloggers

Then, I headed straight to the Sir Francis Drake to register at which point I received the cutest reusable bag with the “I heart FoodBuzz” logo splashed on it. It was brimming with all manner of fantastic foodie gifts. Just a few minutes in, and I was already getting spoiled. This was going to be a fantastic weekend.
