Online Bake Sale for Japan! Let’s Raise some Dough!

Welcome to the Online Bake Sale for Japan. Bakers, bloggers, and food professionals from all over the world have come up with some amazing creations to donate to this auction. All proceeds will benefit Second Harvest Japan, that nation’s first food bank.

Over the last two and a half weeks, I have read the news of the Japan earthquake, tsunami, and subsequent nuclear crisis with great sadness. It was a small news snippet I heard on NPR regarding how tiny the food rations were that lead me to seek out food banks in Japan. I am so glad to have found Second Harvest. For ever $100 donated, they donate $1,000 worth of food. That is one efficient non-profit!

Before we get to the auction items, I just want to take a moment to say that this has been a phenomenal experience. I am so in love with the food blogging community. I owe a special thanks to Andrew Sigal from The Uncarved Block who is matching the first $500 we earn on this bake sale also, Toby of Plate Fodder, one of our donors will match donations on his items up to $50! People have embraced this project with generosity and great support from day one. Now, by day 16 or so, it’s snowballed like crazy, and I’m thinking an intern would have been great. But all joking aside, considering my food blog just turned five months old, this has been the greatest introduction into a community … get the recipe

Great News! Meet, Andrew Sigal

I have really great news! For two weeks, I searched high and wide. I made personal phone calls, I cold called corporations, but I could not get anyone to match any portion of the proceeds to the Online Bake Sale for Japan.

Until, out of nowhere, on Facebook today, a prince of a man said he was trying to contact me. Meet Andrew Sigal, of The Uncarved Block. Visit his blog and say “thanks”.

UPDATE: we beat our goal of $2,5oo by a whole bunch, read all about it.

My original goal was $2,500. I am hoping we can now beat that. Let’s see!

Online Bake Sale for Japan on 3/30. Now 90 Bakers Strong!

UPDATE: I have an exciting bit of news to report. Andrew Sigal of The Uncarved Block has offered to match the first $500 we raise.

My original goal was $2,500. I am hoping we can now beat that. Let’s see!

With only five days left, until the online bake sale for Japan on March 30th, 2011. The list of bloggers, writers, bakers, and professional chefs has grown to nearly 90! We come from nine countries, on four continents and we have one thing in common, we want to raise a lot of dough for Second Harvest Japan!

Second Harvest Japan is that country’s first food bank. They are working very hard to feed people in the wake of this month’s 8.9 earthquake and subsequent tsunami and nuclear reactor problems.

With food rations being as small as one banana, one orange, and one cup of water per day per person, those affected by the disaster in Japan can use all the help they can get.

Those of us who work with food, who write about food, describing it in loving detail, or surf food blogs and “food porn” sites are living in a different world than those facing tiny rations right now. But, there is nothing like putting your passion and your talent to good use- to get a good result.

Update on Online Bake Sale For Japan- Meet the Bakers!

Every day, I read the news from Japan with great sadness. I hope for the best- that the situation with the nuclear reactor in Fukushima Dai-ichi will not worsen, that the hundreds of thousands of people left homeless will be sheltered, fed, and comforted.

In Buddhism, there is a word, metta, meaning“Loving Kindness” I find myself doing a lot of metta meditation these days.

May all beings be safe. May all beings be healthy.
May all beings be happy. May all beings live with ease.

On a personal note, I have had word from my cousin in Japan, and although he was stuck in the Tokyo subway for hours as no trains were running, a friend came to bring him home and he is safe. We were so happy to hear of his safety.

In every tragedy, every disaster, there lies the capacity for human kindness and love. Six days ago when I put out a quick tweet to a few friends asking if they’d like to do a bake sale to help Japan, several friends jumped right in immediately. Since then, the list of food bloggers, professional bakers, and others has grown exponentially! We have people participating from all over the world- the U.S, Canada, the UK, France, Italy, and Australia, so far.

Online Bake Sale to Help Japan

Friday, after 1am, I received a text that said OMG Japan! It woke me, which is unusual. I had two thoughts. I wondered if my friend was going to go to Japan, and then I thought something terrible may have happened, but I fell asleep again thinking Leila was going to Kyoto to see temples. About an hour later, my husband, who runs security teams for several national parks sites, received a phone call. He had to tell his guys at Alcatraz and Hyde Street Pier to take high ground; there was a tsunami warning.

I immediately went to my computer and my heart sank upon reading about the earthquake and subsequent tsunami. As the news came in, I read the live blogs and listed to NPR. This was one time I actually missed having a television.

I am not, surprise surprise, a full time food writer. My day job is pretty great, though. I am a web designer and I work for a company called Care2. We work, exclusively, with progressive nonprofits. I like to say I’m saving the world one pixel at a time. Right now, though, I’m suffering from a pretty serious back injury and in a effort to avoid back surgery, I finally took my doctor’s advice and took some time off of work. Newman's Own Video Still Sabrina Modelle The Tomato Tart

So, I guess, I am officially a star, now! It’s what I aspired to as a child and I’ve finally made it. Thanks to Foodbuzz and Newman’s Own, I finally bit the bullet and made a cooking video- I did miss the Oscars to film this, little sucker, so what do you think, am I on my way to winning one?

A few weeks back, I received an email from Foodbuzz offering me the opportunity to get a free Flip HD video camera from Newman’s Own if  I could come up with an enticing recipe using one or more of their products. No problem. Turns out, I grew up loving Paul Newman. A New Kind of Love is one of my favorite movies and one of my dad’s favorite movie’s was The Hustler. I’ll never forget the first time we saw Newman’s Own Virgin Lemonade; we had to have it. The fact that it tastes like real lemonade kept us coming back for more. As an adult, I’ve always loved Newman’s Own because of their philanthropic side. They’ve donated over $300 million to charity- that’s every penny of their profits!

The recipe I originally pitched to Newman’s Own and Foodbuzz was a chicken cutlet breaded, Milanese style, with their Honey Flax Flakes Cereal and topped with a Newman’s Own Virgin Lemonade Beurre Blanc Sauce (made with their own Pinot Gris).
